27 Apr 2009 The most worrying thing about Dad being home…STAIRS!

Well, here I am back home again after spending the weekend with my Dad and my sister.  I wasn’t really looking forward to the trip as my Dad and I just weren’t getting along but I went anyway.

Our Friday night was quiet, very small talk, and I was freaking out watching my Dad go up the stairs…..he was using a crutch and the rail was wobbly and I could just see the rail falling and him ending up on the bottom set of stairs once he was home all by himself.  It really freaked me out and my sister and I talked and talked about what the options were and what Dad would agree to coming to no great solution.

Saturday, my alarm clock (my daughter :) ) woke me early so I was the one that helped Dad go downstairs in the morning…when I came out of my room he was up and dressed and had the bed made and was waiting for someone to be up, mind it was only 7AM or something!  He really did pretty good, using his crutch again, and I felt a tinsy bit better but still worried. Once downstairs to the kitchen area I helped Dad (as much as he would let me!) get the fruit out to make his juice and he got his breakfast ready and by the time he sat down for me to bring his breakfast on a tray over to him he was winded and sweating!

After that the morning was pretty quiet, he has been coming downstairs and staying downstairs for the day for the most part and going up about 9PM or so to bed.  So, the minimum is down in the mornings and up in the evenings barring any necessary bathroom trips up which we sorta minimized by being creative and using a urinal from the rehab center.

Dad in his chair, "Happy" to be home!

We were expecting a Physical Therapist to come about 1PM that day and we, my sister and I, had lots of questions for her.  She arrived and went over some exercises with him and wanted to watch him move around the house… the kitchen, the stairs, and upstairs in the bathroom and shower.  He had been using a walker to get around and a crutch to do the stairs and one problem we had considered is how does he get the walker upstairs/downstairs and the crutches where he needs them to be when we aren’t there etc.  Well the PT solved the problem by showing him how to use his walker to go up and down the stairs which works brilliantly and solved all the issues we had about him getting stuff up and down when he is all by himself.  We tightened up the railing and she showed him how to move around with the walker in his tiny bathroom which he hadn’t been doing and he was very pleased with all of her suggestions.  We asked about First Alert and also told her we wanted him to have therapy as much as was available and warned her he probably wouldn’t be up for it.  She just took all our information on board and talked him through another gal coming 3 times a week up until his doctor appointment and then depending how that went how it may change after that. ;)

As she was leaving my sister walked her out and asked her frankly how she thought Dad was doing and she said he was doing great, very well for being almost 4 weeks out and that we would be amazed at the progress he made from here on out, with the PT coming 3 days a week to work with him on the stairs especially and just helping do things for himself while keeping in mind his precautions etc.  So, we both felt a lot better after her visit.  Dad wouldn’t even talk about getting First Alert but did say he would take his cordless phone with him when he was doing the stair thing and would that make us happy?  And we agreed that would be great if he would do that.

My little one ended up with a fever that afternoon and so I stayed home while they went to the store, Dad has been just staying in the car but enjoying just getting out of the house.  We made some brownies and a nice dinner and had a little birthday party for Grandpa that evening and my daughter was feeling a bit better after some Tylenol and a nap.

Dad tried the walker thing that evening going up the stairs and the trickiest part is just getting the positioning of it right as you go up but with practice and now with the more solid railing I think he will do fine.

Sunday morning dawned and Dad decided not to wait for us to head downstairs and when my sister went down he was grumpy and not allowing her to help him at all, she ended up in tears and was furious with him!  He does pretty good but then just gets stubborn and stops listening and does stuff he shouldn’t do.   (I was asleep when all this was happening!!!!!) and she told me my daughter went down and told Grandpa to “Be good and not do the wrong things!”, she is very smart and very “perceptive” per my sister!!

So, after a while we all talked about it a little bit and he agreed to let her help and she would work on watching him do somethings as if she wasn’t still there…..a workable compromise!  He just needs to leave the little specks on the floor alone though as he isn’t supposed to bend down to pick stuff up!!!!! (This is going to be hard for him as that kind of stuff drives him crazy!)

Afterwords, I loaded up my car and we took dad to the mall, my sister and I wanted to go get some new bras….(another post I think!) and he wanted to come, it was a lot of exercise for him but he did just great.

With our shopping done we went our separate ways, my daughter and I headed for home after stopping for a bite to eat.  She talked my ear off the whole way home, feeling much better I think! :P The weekend ended up pretty well, Dad and I got along better and he apologized in his way and gave me a big hug before I left.

I am so glad to be home once again, we got home early enough to enjoy a bit of the day and have a nice evening with my hubby!

Till next time….Cheers!

23 Apr 2009 Hip Replacement recovery, going home today…..

Well, finally my Dad is going home!  I am not sure if he is completely ready physically as he will have the challenge of the stairs in his house but I know he wants to be at home.  He has enjoyed the rehab facility in as much as the food has been great and it has been nice to have so many people around him.  His recovery has been going very well and he made marked improvement from last week to this.

They started working on doing stairs last week and the main thing for him will be keeping in mind all the precautions he has in place until the doctor releases him.  He was able to move up his appointment with the doctor and will be seeing him on May 6th which will be about 5 weeks 1 day out of surgery.  He is hopeful he will be released from the precautions and allowed to drive at that point but we will have to wait and see.

I saw his friend who had surgery about 12 weeks ago tomorrow and he is doing just fabulous!  Moving great, feels great, is golfing and the whole 9 yards so I am hopeful my Dad will get to that point as well if he keeps doing what he is supposed to. ( I know I keep repeating that! ….hmmmmm!)

He will have some home therapy about 3 times a week and he was trying to get out of that but my sister is setting that up to start ASAP which will be good.  They come and check out the house and base the therapy on how best to help him get around the house etc.

I am going to head over again this weekend mostly to see my sister, to help her do some cleaning and so she can see our youngest daughter.  My older kids have other stuff going on which is probably best as too many people just get my Dad agitated and we don’t want that!  I am hoping this will be my last trip for a while.  My husband and I were talking and I have been over there more times this last month than we normally go in a year!  So, I figure I will be good now until about 2011!! ;)

My Dad’s 81st birthday is on May 1st so we are going to have a little birthday celebration this weekend while my sister is in town which will be fun.

So for now, off to catch up on the ever piling up laundry!!!! Have a great day!

13 Apr 2009 Hip Replacement surgery; 2 Weeks out

Today marks 2 weeks out from Hip Replacement surgery for my Dad. My family and I went over to see him this past weekend, since it was Easter weekend I thought it would be nice for all of us to go. We arrived just after the dinner hour on Friday night and my dad looked just great! Sat in his wheel chair he was chatty and looked very well.

I hadn’t seem him since Monday and the change and improvement both in his physical and mental state was quite apparent. He seemed much more with it and was in a pretty good mood. Last weekend he was having a bit of difficulty joining the dots I think mostly due to all the medication he is on.  He really seemed much better this time which I am very happy about.  He has been doing great with physical therapy and is moving much better and needs less assistance to do some of the regular things like going to the bathroom and such. He wheels around in his wheelchair to the dining room for his meals all by himself now and has been enjoying the company of his fellow residents.

They took off his bandage on Saturday and his wound is healing nicely, there is still some bruising but nothing like it was. I had a chance to speak to the Physical Therapist on Saturday about Dad’s recovery and she indicated he was doing really well and making marked improvement.  I had noticed they had posted a sign up in Dad’s room about his “hip precautions” the things he can and cannot do.  I asked her about that, she said it was probably to help him remember and also possible he had been over-doing it and to remind him to behave!

I was able to spend some time alone with him on Saturday while my family did some shopping and such which was nice, we had lunch together and I met a couple of the people staying there that he had gotten to know.  It is amazing the life stories you hear in a nursing home.  The older generation have a lot to share and I think we sometimes forget to take time to ask questions when we have the opportunity to do so.  I know my Dad loves to talk about childhood memories and relatives I never knew, his college days, being in the army, and even the work he did and it’s all very fascinating.

My husband and daughter joined us later in the afternoon as they were having an Easter Egg hunt which she enjoyed immensely and we came back again on Sunday for a wonderful Easter brunch they were having for all the residents.

My Dad has been enjoying the food (he is definitely one of those guys that the way to his heart is through his stomach :) ) and all the attention he has been getting while recovering.  The people that work there are just great and many of the folks there have asked him if he has considered moving in.  The nursing home he is recovering in is attached to a big senior residence that has apartments etc and he actually has a few friends that have been living there since it opened about a year ago.  Having the nursing home attached allows married couples to stay together if one spouse gets ill and the other can no longer care for them.

So, I will be heading back over again when the weekend gets here to see how he is progressing.  He is supposed to be there for 20 days but it could end up being more due to the “hip precautions” he has in place.  He cannot move past 80 degrees while sitting, he cannot put more than 30% of his weight on that leg, he cannot cross his lets or rotate his hip.  The one that concerns us is where he cannot put more than 30% of his weight on that leg as this means they will not allow him to go up or down stairs and he has two sets of stairs in his house and the bedroom and bathrooms are not on the main floor.  He also lives alone.  We are there, my sisters and I, for a bit of time but generally he is on his own so they may recommend he stays put a while longer.

Overall he is very happy with the whole experience, he feels pretty good and is kicking himself a bit that he didn’t do the surgery a long time ago.  My dad is a very hard sell on things and for him to say that is just great.  I am hoping he will be able to play golf sooner rather than later.

We had a nice weekend both spending time with Dad and being able to do a few things on our own.  I am pooped out but home now to catch up on everything….including sleep I hope!

Thanks to all our friends and family for their prayers, we aren’t at the finish line yet so do keep praying!
