16 Mar 2009 My Daugher wants a Tattoo….part 2

So, back in February I told you that my oldest daughter wanted to get a tattoo.  Well, after I posted that she decided to go ahead and make an appointment and have a design drawn up for her.  The artist took a couple weeks to do the drawing but she was very pleased with how he took her idea and made it real for her.  It is a lot bigger than I think she anticipated but I think it will look really good!

Her appointment was last Saturday and myself, her dad and her boyfriend all came to support her.  Her dad and I tried to prepare her that it was going to HURT! and she just needed to get in the zone and stay relaxed and still.  She didn’t like hearing that part but she was excited to she was willing to do it no matter what.

OUCH!!

OUCH!!

Well, he got the design on and it looked awesome, really fit the area nicely and I think she will be very happy with it.  She is getting it on her hip and kind of up her side which is a very tender area so she was laying on her back and I was holding her hand and the look on her face when he started was priceless, (unfortunately I didn’t get THAT particular picture!) it is hard to explain how it feels if you haven’t had one…..it really just hurts!

Not feeling so good....

Not feeling so good....

After watching for a while, her dad and boyfriend buggered off to go do some shopping….so I was just there trying to encourage her and let her squeeze my fingers off! :)

He did the outline in just under an hour which was fast, it was looking good and she was hanging in there.  She had a little break while he changed machines and got ready to do the shading and color.  That part just feels different, more needles and I don’t think it is quite so bad…..  He had done a bit of the shading when her dad and boyfriend came back, she was hurting a lot by then and her dad  started talking fishing with the artist so he wasn’t going at the steady pace he had been.  That said it was probably good as she had had enough at about 2 hours in.

She looked white as a sheet and didn’t feel good at all…..it’s hard for your body to take that kind of pain for a long time…everyone is different and it really was the right time for her to stop.  I am a bit of a hardcore….I just want to get it over with and he kept telling her she didn’t have to be like me…she said I get props for sitting as long as I have for my tattoos…made me smile…..!

So, she settled the bill (yeah, we almost forgot to do that part!!) and she will have to schedule another sitting to go back and get it finished, hopefully it won’t take too long.  The bad part is it usually is still kind of tender and I think it tends to hurt a bit more and since you’ve just been you KNOW IT’S GOING TO HURT!!!!

It was an eventful day and after letting her recover a bit we all went and got my hubby and her little sister and headed out for a nice Mexican meal!

So, I will keep you posted on this one……and show you the finished tat once she gets it done!

Cheers!

03 Feb 2009 My Daughter wants a Tattoo!

My oldest daughter called me yesterday and said she wants to get a tattoo for her birthday…..she will be 20 on Valentine’s Day!  Wow, I can remember the day she was born  like it was yesterday! Anyway, I have some tattoos myself (and so does her dad for that matter!) so I can’t really say “No! don’t do that!” , and I just love ink so it is kinda cool to me that she wants to get one….(Is that bad??)

She came down to do some shopping a couple of weeks ago and we talked about it and how much it would cost etc.  We went down to the tattoo shop and talked to the artist and got a ruff idea of cost and time.  With that in mind I thought it might be a while before she got it done.

I was older (30) when I got my first one and it was before EVERYONE started getting them.  I was kind of at a crossroads and going through a difficult time in my life and I just wanted to do it for me, so I did.  I got a snake on my upper arm and the head runs out to my collar bone.  I remember getting it done and there were people staring into the shop watching as most of the time the artist tattooed men.  He said mine was the biggest tattoo he had done on a women other than his wife, most were just little tiny doodles on ankles and things.  I shocked my workplace at the time, this was nearly 20 years ago and women just weren’t walking around with tattoos like they are now.  I was quite amused when a co-worker didn’t want me to come into her cubicle after that!!! WOW!

I can understand my daughter’s desire to get a tattoo and it is important to her to get something that represents her at this time in her life, she doesn’t want to get it where anyone would see unless she has a swimming costume on or something which is pretty smart.  I got the one on my arm and for a long time I had to be careful what I wore which is a pain in the butt.  I don’t worry much anymore though! :) I figure I have them, I love them, I wanted to get them and if that makes someone not want to know me…..well that’s too bad, they missed out on getting to know someone that could have been a friend.  I do still shock people though and it makes me laugh! I guess I don’t look the tattoo type or something, whatever that means.

So, it may be with the end of my daughter’s teenage years she will mark it permanently with something meaningful to her, am I a bad mom for not suggesting her do something different?  Well, some may say so but I am hoping to be there for her and hold her hand…..(because it hurts and she won’t like that one bit!) and mark it as a moment we shared something special together.

Cheers!
