28 Apr 2009 Dr. Laura’s new book, “In Praise of Stay-at-Home Moms”

I love to read articles and surf the web and see what other moms have to say about being a “Stay at Home Mom”.   This article was a wonderful critique of Dr. Laura’s new book, “In Praise of Stay-at-Home Moms”.  It is wonderful if a woman is able and wants to stay at home with her children when they are young.  I am a mom who did both, with my older children I had to work, I had no choice in the matter.  My husband at the time would not allow me to stay at home or look for other ways to make money.  I had a really good job, it paid very well and with our bills I couldn’t afford to quit.  It killed me….but I did it.  Does that mean I am a horrible mom, I hope not!  I am fortunate now to be home and I feel so blessed but I think we all have to realize that every situation is different, not all families have the same options.

The writer also brings up some great points about how instead of criticising moms that work, write a book that looks for ways for working moms to spend more time with their kids.  For instance, on-site daycare, job sharing, paid maternity leave, pumping rooms for moms who breastfeed, and how about part time jobs with insurance benefits.  All great ideas!

Hart to Heart: Stay-at-home mom says ‘No thanks, Dr. Laura’

Savannah Morning News‎Apr 25, 2009‎

Dear Dr. Laura Schlessinger,

As a stay-at-home mom, I’m supposed to agree with you.

I’m supposed to thank you for your 16th book, “In Praise of Stay-at-Home Moms,” which exalts mothers like me who give up their jobs to remain at home.

But, to quote Alaska Gov. Sara Palin, a work-outside-the-home mom, “Thanks, but no thanks.”

I disagree with your stance that ALL moms should stay home for the first five years of their children’s lives.

How can you declare unilaterally that each and every mother and child are better off at home?

Instead, I uphold a mom’s ability to choose the right work-life balance and child care arrangement for her family. Yes, Dr. Laura, some moms can be breadwinners and breadmakers. And be good …

So, check it out and let me know what you think. Do you agree with Dr. Laura? If you were going to write a book on this subject what would you write about?

Thanks for listening! Have a great day!

Grace
