My Daughter wants a Tattoo!
2009
My oldest daughter called me yesterday and said she wants to get a tattoo for her birthday…..she will be 20 on Valentine’s Day! Wow, I can remember the day she was born like it was yesterday! Anyway, I have some tattoos myself (and so does her dad for that matter!) so I can’t really say “No! don’t do that!” , and I just love ink so it is kinda cool to me that she wants to get one….(Is that bad??)
She came down to do some shopping a couple of weeks ago and we talked about it and how much it would cost etc. We went down to the tattoo shop and talked to the artist and got a ruff idea of cost and time. With that in mind I thought it might be a while before she got it done.
I was older (30) when I got my first one and it was before EVERYONE started getting them. I was kind of at a crossroads and going through a difficult time in my life and I just wanted to do it for me, so I did. I got a snake on my upper arm and the head runs out to my collar bone. I remember getting it done and there were people staring into the shop watching as most of the time the artist tattooed men. He said mine was the biggest tattoo he had done on a women other than his wife, most were just little tiny doodles on ankles and things. I shocked my workplace at the time, this was nearly 20 years ago and women just weren’t walking around with tattoos like they are now. I was quite amused when a co-worker didn’t want me to come into her cubicle after that!!! WOW!
I can understand my daughter’s desire to get a tattoo and it is important to her to get something that represents her at this time in her life, she doesn’t want to get it where anyone would see unless she has a swimming costume on or something which is pretty smart. I got the one on my arm and for a long time I had to be careful what I wore which is a pain in the butt. I don’t worry much anymore though!
I figure I have them, I love them, I wanted to get them and if that makes someone not want to know me…..well that’s too bad, they missed out on getting to know someone that could have been a friend. I do still shock people though and it makes me laugh! I guess I don’t look the tattoo type or something, whatever that means.
So, it may be with the end of my daughter’s teenage years she will mark it permanently with something meaningful to her, am I a bad mom for not suggesting her do something different? Well, some may say so but I am hoping to be there for her and hold her hand…..(because it hurts and she won’t like that one bit!) and mark it as a moment we shared something special together.
Cheers!
Grace
