These days we love to put a value on everything, What does it cost? What is it worth? Well today I spent $100 but the value of my day goes far beyond that.
So today I have hijacked my wife’s blog and she’ll find out sometime though I’m not going to share it with her, just let her be surprised to find this here. She is out of town taking some teen moms to camp. That means since Wednesday I have been looking after my 5 year old daughter. Wednesday evening I took her to swimming lessons, Thursday some friends looked after her during the day and I took her to ballet and swimming again and cooked her dinner.
Friday was the big day, the day. A day my daughter had been talking about for 2 weeks. As husbands we are often cast in the role of provider, working and snatching a few minutes with our kids in a way that makes us feel like we’re not being good dads. Today my daughter had it all planned, could we live up to the promise?
The day started at 7am when we got up and had cornflakes for breakfast. It was early so I made some detergent for my wife and drew up a shopping list. Next up the grocery shop and with my daughter’s help we had that wrapped up before 10am. Next up my daughter’s day began.
She wanted her nails done. There’s a place about a block away so we headed there. Now these kind of things are a mystery to men so when my daughter chose sparkly blue and also sparkly gold polish wanting to alternate colors on hands and feet I went with it. She had a pedicure and the polish was applied as she sat in a huge chair with her feet just reaching so the lady could put the polish on. My daughter looked so pleased. We sat under infrared lights to dry her nails and then went home for a snack, my daughter delighted with her glistening nails. Price $8, the look on my daughter’s face worth far more.
After lunch we went for a brief shop before a movie and we struck gold, The store had a really thin selection in my daughter’s age range but we found 3 outfits that fitted perfectly. There were 3 pieces to each outfit comprising, top, pants and skirt, a couple with headbands, my daughter loved them all and they fitted great. We had to try them all on of course. Cost $50
We had to be a little quick because of the movie so we checked out and made our way to the pet shop to look around prior to the movie, we enjoyed gazing at the fish. Mental note perhaps time for a fish tank!
3D toy Story that’s an extra $2 for the pleasure, if you please. So armed with popcorn and a drink in we went. It was a great movie, really well thought out intricate details and much to appreciate whether you’re young or old. The 3d really brought it to life. At first my daughter didn’t want to wear the specs but soon warmed to them when the movie started. She loved the movie and by the end was sat on my lap as the tension rose. A great film and a memorable afternoon. Cost $27.
On the way back my daughter said “ice cream” she knew the store and with 31 flavors it wasn’t about to be a quick choice, after tasting raspberry she plumped for Cookie Dough and sat there as the sun poured through the windows enjoying her treat.
Then home to hang out a little before the final of my daughter’s swimming lessons. On arriving she said “this was the best day ever with my daddy”. She splashed and had fun and passed the class with flying colors. She graduated from Dolphin to Shark apparently.
Then home for tea and Pizza with salad and fruit salad. My daughter fed the dog and said it was time for bed. As she was cleaning her teeth she said ominously “tomorrow we have more things on our schedule”. Not bad for a 5 year old. She ventured more shopping, unlikely I said, so we settled on washing the car, she loves that, some yard sales, ditto, and then swimming.
So in closing I guess my point is it’s not the money you spend on your child but the time spend with them that counts. We hung out for over 12 hours today and I can’t help feeling I don’t do that often enough. I wonder how we have let a society build around us that cuts down our time with kids and how we have tolerated that. Spending time with our kids is not only enriching to them but to us too. We can see the results of our efforts and the lasting impact it makes on a young life when they realize that their parents have time for them.
So let me know what you think and keep this posts a secret from my wife if only for a few days!
